Its been a while since I bought an outboard. I just bought a 13.5 ft row/sail that will take a 2-3 hp motor. Thought I'd try to save a $ and get a good, used motor. Prev exp only w evinrude and merc. A reverse and water cooling seem like good features. Any make/model suggestions. Is teh Honda 2 hp as great as the reviews suggest? Briggs & Straton? My home water will be an 800 acre inland lake in N NJ.

Thanks

Briggs & Straton is a lawn mower engine to which a prop has been fitted. Noisy and vibrates like a bed in a cheap motel. Stick with the "real" outboard manufacturers.

A twin will be much smoother than a single. The E/J 3 hp twins are excellent motors.Been around since the 50s and you can still get routine parts for them.

What Steelspike said.

The OMC 3 and 4HP twins are the best small outboards ever built. . .by anyone.

The 4HP made in the 80s had FNR available as an option.

No other small outboard comes close in my opinion, and that includes current models.
