Ok folks, I admit to being a newbie to boating - so please be gentle!! Have some mechanical experience w/ car engines but not outboards. Two problems: most serious is engine will start, goes in gear, but upon acceleration bogs down - engine doesn't quit - just won't increase rpm;s or speed - some surging but mostly bogs down - like she's starving for gas. Slow cruising is fine. Replaced the plugs, cleaned what I think is the primary carb (I believe there's also 6 more carbs for each cyclinder) which I have not yet inspected. Traced fuel lines they appear fine.
Any recommended additional places to check(and how to check) would be helpful.
Second problem - RPM guage is stuck at 3000 RPMs, does not move at all, not even sure where to start with this, so just checked the back of the instrument panel and it looked ok.
Thanks in advance for all thoughts and suggestions;)

go to your dealer, and get a manual for your motor. there are 6 carbs, i don't know what you cleaned.

I purchased a Clymer manual for the engine, I don't find the pictures/text very helpful - I did find a part list on the internet, I believe what I cleaned was part of the fuel bracket, it had a float and needle valve, I incorrectly called it a carb see attached pic - hopefully this helps clarify my original question - as I said I am "new" - Thanks for your time and knowledge.

that is the VST tank.

its not a carb

the vst tank is there to make shure the carbs get a constant flow of fuel without any vapor pockets.

you will still need to clean all the carbs.

You check the air vent on the tank? Jerry

Check to if the bulb has any pressure while WOT. If it doesn't trying giving it a couple of pumps and see how the motor responses. If it opens up it might be the fuel filter or fuel pump. If it doesn't I would clean the carbs.

Re: Newbie: 2001 Johnson 150 Bogs down

Thanks for all the ideas, I changed the plugs and the fuel fillter, didnt' help, will check the other items - THANKS for all the ideas. The RPM guage does not move, it does not come down when the engine is off and does not go up when speed increases - stays around 3000 RPM. Someone suggested changing guage - but I would like to know how the RPM guage works so I could do more troubleshooting.
Again - thanks to all, additional ideas welcome - you folks are awesome!!:D

Ok folks - based on the direction you gave me earlier, I checked the fuel tank vent and it was clear. Moved on to the carbs, cleaned the 6 of them, some of the jets were dirty. Put it all back together and SUCCESS. Accerlerates just fine - Thanks to all for the suggestions.
Now - does anyone have any ideas on whats wrong with the Tachometer. The temp, low oil, lights etc in it - all work when starting the engine but the RPMs are stuck at 2800, they dont go up or down. Any ideas???
