My 1st post on this forum, hi folks. I'm looking to purchase my first new boat, probably 20'-22' bowrider with some guts in the powerplant and built to last many years. I live in Portland, OR and will moor it on the Willamette River. Usage will be family skiing/boarding/tubing and just zipping around the river. I want my 1-yr old to enjoy it when she's a teen, so I'll take good care of it. I am considering a 2010 Regal 2000 with a 5.0 Volvo GXi 270hp w/ tower and a SS prop. Would love some general purchase advice from more experienced boaters, and any specific comments on this model, the Regal brand, and comparable models as well.

For my boating experience level, I grew up on old 16' outboards, regularly breaking down, and often taking on water. :) I bought, and soon re-sold, an old (80's era) Marlin I/O 7yrs ago with similar headaches and have been saving my pennies since then to get into a "real" boat as I crest middle age. I'm open to buying a used boat, within the past 5yrs or so, to save some $$, but am finding myself hesitent to buy into old problems again, so I'm leaning towards purchasing new so I can have dealer support. Plus I'll know anything that goes wrong was my own darn fault.

Other comparable brands in the running for me are Chapparal, Monterey, and Cobalt, although I honestly don't see how I can afford Cobalt new so probably only used if I go with them. My preferred marina specializes in Regal and Cobalt, so those brands would be my first choice if it makes sense.

I'll be sure to get good covers, dual battery, and a quality bilge pump for mooring, as I know from experience these items are essential to keeping her in good shape over the long run. I won't be trailering her much, just in for spring and out for fall.

All my previous boating has felt bogged down with underpowered units, so this time I want something with some punch out of the hole. I'm looking for performance, longevity, and reliability. Is the Regal 2000 a good call?

The best boat I owned was a Regal. When I get another one that is what I'm going after. (I own small home builts now). What you are looking at sounds great for the area. It would be big enough for the Columbia as well. I'll tell you what, if you buy the boat and don't like it I'll give you my father-in-law's address in Parkrose and you can drop it off there.:)

That boat should be nicely powered with 270 HP. Get the DP drive.

Sounds good. So my next question is when is the best time of the year to buy a new boat in terms of best prices? I'm guessing mid-summer is not.

Regardless, for me I won't have the resources to purchase this season, so I will be shopping for next season. I can start as early as Oct 2010, but probably won't want to buy any later than April 2011.

Any guesses when boat dealers will have the best offers in general? There's the Portland boat show in January, is that a good bet?
