I just picked up a 95 sunbird 170 f&s. it has a 90hp johnson that runs well I'm having major steering issues. that could cause an accident. the boat has hydraulic steering that when in water pulls right so hard it takes all of my weight to keep her straight, turning left is about impossible. on the trailer the wheel turns with ease as does the whole engine. In the water its to the point that its actually scary and idont want to injure my family or anyone elses. i really would appriciate any advice I can get before i take it in to the shop. thank you very much

Re: newbie! boat pulls HARD right!need help!

i just adjusted the trim. It was all the way to the left. which i believe would make it pull right? I cant believe that little thing could cause such a prob! It only has what seems like 1-1.5 inches of movement in either direction. Does that sound normal? One mre thing where do i measure from to ensure proper mount? thanks

You adjust the trim to "point" in the direction that it is pulling...so if it's pulling right, "point" the trim tab right. My 19' with a "torquey" inline 6 REALLY pulled hard until I made the proper adjustment...a small one at that...now it steers and tracks straight with almost no counter steering needed throughout the throttle range. Good luck

Also, look at trimming out the motor. Mine pulls hard and steers like a bear until I trim up a bit. If you don't have a TNT, go out and try different hole settings on the manual trim.

newbie!!need help!

thanks for the help guys adjustment worked great! I have much bigger probs now.... took her out today steered great but after 3 or 4 minutes on plane it stalled and was beeping at me every 30 seconds roughly. could only get started in nuetral giving it plenty of throttle. it was idling very low and when put in gear stalled immediatly. i was able to get it back to the dock by very very slowly putting it in gear. as it did before it would run strong then stall. repeated process a few times to get home! i knew the beeping wasnt the oil tank level as i filled before we left home. when we got home i looked at the tank someone forgot to put the cap back on! Im wondering if that oil pump requires the tank to be sealed to work correctly? I just need to no where to begin doing what trouble shooting I can do myself. If i remember correctly it may have beeped a few times on our last ride but never showed any signs of anything wrong. the oil was half full then any help is greatly appriciated!
