Newbie Boater - gas/oil mix

I haven't been around boats since I was with my ex, and he did all the maintenance. I just bought a 1989 Javelin Fish & Ski with a 150HP V-6 Johnson on it. I vaguely remember him mixing oil with the gas, but I don't know the mixture ratio. I know you have to mix gas with lawn mowers and weed eaters and basically its a 2-stroke like those, but I don't know how much. Or am I wrong and you don't? Help a sista out?

Cool! Thanks for the speedy reply. One more question - any particular kind or weight of oil?

The kind of oil you want is variously known as "two cycle oil" or "two stroke oil", but the official name is "TCW-3" (which means Two Cycle Watercooled 3rd version). Buy any oil that has that designation on the label. Do not use two cycle oils that are intended for weed eaters, chain saws, etc. Those engines are air cooled and have a higher operating temperature than an outboard engine which is water cooled. Therefore the oils are different. If you ask "which brand of oil is best", do a search on these forums with the above mentioned terms and you'll get a whole belly full.

One thing I have to mention and ask: are you sure your engine is not "oil injection"? Is there a separate oil tank? That is a two cycle engine that mixes the oil for you so you don't have to do it yourself. But you need to know if it has that system, and if the system is working. What did the person you bought it from tell you about oil? I would ask these specific questions of that person.

Hey, have fun with your boat, sound like a good one.

"TCW-3" is the critical type of oil. Pick your choice of brands. Just please dont ask the Forum :D ...

In the past 4 years, that topic has been argued to death
If you like scientific explanations  and personal testimonies  , search out Oil types on this forum. It'll probably take you the greater part of a week to read them all :)

Nav

It sounds to me as if you want to do the boat, & engine stuff alone, & that's OK. If you are unfamilliar w/ boating & outboards, & don't want to involve anyone else, may I suggest at least getting a book on maintenance & care of your Engine, & boat. Buying one is best, but the library is a good place to start looking at books for free. If you want to spend some real smart money, walk into the dealer of your engine, talk to them about showing you what to look for, & a check list of things to do. That may save you from breaking something really costly just from not knowing. IMHO Good Luck, Joe

Perfidiajoe makes a good point. The last two boats I've owned, I was lucky enough to find a trusted mechanic to do the stuff I couldn't or wouldn't do. He was VERY happy to show me how to do anything I wanted to and could do myself - simple maintenance, grease points, carb adjustment, recommended fuel and oil, etc. etc. He has more than enough business and is happy to provide info to customers. My local dealers and parts guys are also generally willing to answer simple questions too. Good luck.
