So i bought an 85 carver 26 santa cruz last august for a great deal w/trailer. The boat was in the water when i bought it so its my fault i didnt inspect the outdrive. This is what i am left to deal with and fix.Mercrusier alpha one w/ mercruiser 260 v8 670 hours.

How much is too much corrosion on the outdrive?

As long as things work and don't leak, the corrosion shouldn't be that big of a problem. Clean it up and paint it. If the trim cylinders start leaking water into or oil out, replace them.
The anodes are another problem. The stud should have threads about 3/4" long sticking out, that is corroded off also. You need to replace the bottom bolts (probably on both sides).

Thanks for the feedback Don s. I am from the aviation world so corrosion makes us really nervous. Why would the anodes on the transom be in that condition but the one by the prop be in great condition ( the fin type)?

Previous owner probably kept replacing the fin, and forgot about those 2.
Also there is one more at the very bottom of the transom plate, right below the hydraulic manifold. Second picture shows it is black in color, make sure it is not painted.

Ah, good ol'e neglect.Alot of things have been neglected on this boat. It sat for years without running until a guy bought it from an estate sale and then sold it to me. Its amazing what information pops up about something after you purchase it. All i heard was " why didnt you ask me about it?". But the boat has been fun so far and just need to get it back into good working order. Next up is to troubleshoot why it wont make stated RPM @ WOT......

Pull the outdrive and see what's in the bellows. If you had water sitting in there, the gimbal bearing and ujoints are probably all rusted up. The other thing that happens in salt water with a leaky bellows is the gimbal housing corrodes off where the bellows attaches. Then, things start to get expensive and labor intensive.

Re: Newbie corrosion pics and questions

The bellows is shot for sure, I know i have to pull the whole assembly out and inspect it all. I was just hoping for a miracle and just plead ignorance on the whole thing. My gimble bearing is groaning, probably due to the seperated bellows and water just sitting in there. I just know once i start tearing into it, i will be rebuilding alot of things. The best thing to do here is convince myself to pull it all apart and do it right the first time!!! Thanks for all the great feedback

If you are from the aviation world then you know what the first step is. Get the manual and start reading...;) Good luck...

yep, i'll be starting from the cheapest step then work my way up. I have been looking at the sticky on WOT problems. It has a wealth of knowledge.
