Newbie going for tune up

I have been reading many of the forum Q & A's for a while. Most have pointed me in the right direction. I aquired a 1977 Galaxie 18'. Volvo Penta 280. I'm the third owner. The last owner let it sit for about 6 years and left me with alot to do. Before any cosmetics I first went to the engine. I replaced the oil in the engine and cleaned out the fuel tank and replaced the fuel lines and filter. After a new battery I submerged outdrive to test the engine. Believe it or not but once the fuel pump started delivering fuel it ran like a charm. It starts and runs as good as my new truck. So I felt I could spend the dough and get it registered. I took it out for some sea trials and basically it fell on its face. Idleing it is good but in the lake under real conditions it has no giddi-up. After doing some more reading I feel a really good tune up is just what the doctor ordered. However I dont want to be taken for a snow job. Can anybody tell me what is considered a must and what is likely to be overlooked. I want to take my family out but only if I know it was done right. Also, If you feel I missed something in my assumptions I'll be open to your help. Lastly, I did have some leaks from the I/O union while in the water.

Thank you,

Do you mean water leaked into the boat from around the transom area? If so can you be more precise in saying just where it was entering from?

As for a good tune-up, if you are planning on doing it yourself, the usual items need to be replaced and adjusted. Fuel filter(s), Spark Plugs, Plug Leads, Cap, Rotor, Points, Condenser. Set dwell, gap points, check timing, timing advance, choke settings, idle mixture, etc. If its been sitting for ages you may want to rebuild the carb in the event its fouled up with varnish and corrosion. I could probably go on, but I think I will let someone else have a shot.

Thank you for the reply. No I will not be doing the tune-up my self. I work globally and at any moment. When my phone rings I'm gone. Yes to your question about the transom. The leak was from around the bolts and started adding up. I was glad to have replaced the belge pump.
