Newbie hard starting question

Just a quick question, got a 2002 saltwater series 150xl that has a hard time starting when motor is tilted up a bit. Seems like I need to lower it to a complete level for it to start.

Is this normal?

Also, How long do you have to push the key in for the choke?

I do squeeze the primer bulb until it feels hard...about 5 squeezes.

I can't figure out the easiest way to start this thing. On my old i/o boat all i did was to "pump/push" the throttle forward twice and bam it starts no problem.

Re: Newbie hard starting question

I had the same problem and sometimes still do. Mine has a enricher instead of a choke. I push the throttle level about half way(in neutral) after pumping the ball. turn key to on position and push in for 2 seconds; engage starter. If you do hear the engine try to fire disengage starter and push the choke key in for 2 more seconds.Repeat until the motor starts. Be careful not to flood the motor because this is a headache. Good luck

Hey thanks HL!

Do you have your engine trimmed down at all?

I make sure the motor is level to slightly down when I start.

Hey thanks guys! I guess everything I mentioned is pretty normal with these motors.
