I'm thinking on rebuilding my late 70's 85hp Mercury outboard.

I've never rebuilt an outboard, but I have stripped and rebuilt a couple of snowmobiles with my dad as a highschooler.

I was wondering if this is a good place to come for support.

So my first question is this:

I have a late 70's 85hp merc outboard with power tilt/trim that has no compression in cylinder no.2. It was killed two summers ago. Before that it had and 150lbs of compression in all four.

Given my problem, my experience, and intangibles such as merc used to make mercury only tools that may not be available from anyone to rent anymore...

Is it realistic for me to tackle this project on my own using the mercury repair manual for my engine.

I've already rebuilt the fuel pump,... but that's a piece of cake... compared to a blown cylinder.

I can link to uploaded photos too for help.

'afternoon MercMark,

welcome to iboats. i for one am no merc expert but there are several here who are.

my experience with these guys is that they are very willing to assist in anyway that they can. as you seem to have a mechanical aptitude, go for the rebuild. when you run into an issue, describe the problem and ask the question. these guys will offer excellent perspective and advise. be advised in advance that there may be questions for which there are no clear-cut answers. these types of questions will yield a wealth of opinions and perspectives. the ultimate decision will be yours.

as to your concern on specialty tools, don't get too worked up over it. more times then not you'll figure a way around it and when you can't, again, just ask. somebody here will be able to help.

enough said?

grab your wrenches and service manual and get after it.

let us know how your doing.

Goos Luck
(and most important)
HAVE FUN!

thanks klondike.

I am hopeful and so far, I'm going to do it. I'm just concerned that I will get half way through and be unable to recover.

I guess that would be no great loss though since the engine doesn't work now anyway.
