First off a much app. thanks ahead of time and I promise I will get the manuals a.s.a.p.
the boat I was just given is a 1984 Bayliner Capri mod unknown but It's a bow rider 18'8" according the reg. with a Volvo AQ125/270 I/O.
After an exhausting week of cleaning what resembles a dumpster of 3yr.s worth of leaves ect. you guys know the drill. Okay the biggest reason I can see why this guy walked is the electrical is a mess. with this in mind here's the questions

1 Primary wires to the coil white and purple I'm guessing white+ purple- (points) if so the coil is wired bass akwards
2 fuses location nothing works
3 starter solenoid any auto version?
4 Coolant type? please read below
the good stuff so far I was able to crank the engine over to get a comp. test 140+ across the board no diff. to speak of the oil was clean no sign of water outdrive shifts nicely the coolant tank is full of what i have no clue thus the ?? above.
sorry for the long post but as i belong to a cou8ple of motorcycle sites I find there's nothing more aggravating than questions without details
Thank you
Ed

Coolant is any good antifreeze 50/50 mix.
Starter is a complete unit no seperate solenoid.Very EXPENSIVE!!!
If it's already wired it's probably right.
Test light on the breakers/fuses.Corrosion after setting.
The water pump impeller should be changed.
The manifold.Take it off and check the mating surfaces on the head.
Then check the end where the water comes out for corrosion.
Volvos use good paint on the manifolds they look new long after they turn to crap.J

Re: Newbie in need, ain't we all

I bought a new permanent magnet gear reduction stater for my AQ 125 for $160.00 from

Morris & Sons Rebuilders
4950 Sashabaw Rd, Clarkston, MI 48346
http://www.morris.com

It is a lot smaller than the original stater but it turns the motor over a lot faster. Works great. You may want to replace the stater relay it's only $17.00 at Autozone. My starter was sticking and originally thought it was the starter. Took it in had it tested and seemed to perform fine, opened it up and the 3 of the brushes were stuck and the brush plate corroded. I did not find the relay problem until we put it back in the water and the starter stuck again. Fortunately there is an Autozone across the highway from the lake. Ran across the highway bought a new relay installed it on the water and back boating in no time!

Re: Newbie in need, ain't we all

Thanks for the responses guys spent the day ringing out the wiring amazing what the final straw can be :( long story short I met the guy that actually owned the boat (dealt with his father in law) He purchased the boat in 98 and had the motor rebuilt in the fall of 06 inc a new heat exchanger and ran it in 07 in the spring of 08 not being able to start it tried to repair it himself and as he put it I'm no mechinac and with a new wife and even newer baby can't afford to have it repaired "poor slob".Okay now for the even better stuff.
according to this fella the engine has aprox. 50 hr.s on it and I believe it the cam section is clean enough to eat off of.
now what I have accomplished is...
Found the master breaker and reset it with a sicking crunch wha la all the pretty little lights now work.
rang out the rest of the wiring using my handy dandy test light, cleaned the points (still new) Pulled the fuel line and ran it to a lawn mower tank, and cleaned the carb.
After rigging a water source the old lady of the sea fired right up:D

future plans First Manuals!! then yes new impeller new timing belt new coolant ect. oh yeah after reading this new starter the solenoid is wasted
Once again thanks
Ed

Can't stress the importance of a new impeller ASAP before running it again. One that old will surly come apart, then you MUST find all the little pieces or risk overheat damage.

Purple wire is key switch power and should be on the + side of the coil.

Good to hear you managed to fix what he left for dead!

Outdrive oil is 10-30 motor oil. 2.5 quarts.

Love the signature in red How true
and yeah I do plan the impeller next along with the fluids. It's a shame he walked this thing is turning out to be a real gem or at this stage a diamond in the very rough but the major wood transom, floors ect. are as solid as a rock as is the hull itself which is something to be said for a Bayliner
