I was helping a friend replace his water pump impellar in his lower unit, and I learned AFTER tearing apart you have to put the drive in forward. I'm having a hard time putting it back together, is there any tricks, or ways to get the upper shift collar looking part into forward and stay there?

There is no impeller or raw water pump in a TRS drive.

use a set of vice grips on a propellor blade, protect it with cardboard. they will weigh the propellor down keeping it in forward gear. remember, forward has the shift pointing straight forward, anything else means the halves were put together and the shift wasnt aligned properly.
the control must also be in forward

if you get it in forward ya gotta keep pressure.. ie the vice grips on the prop to hold it in forward while you slip it back on... or you can have someone hold the prop and keep it in forward..

When you removed the drive without having it in forward you could have bent the shift shaft, shift shaft lever, shift shaft coupler, or damaged the shift shaft slide, all located in the drive bellhousing. The shift shaft coupler on the lower drive unit could also be bent. It's also possible you damaged shift cable. Very common problem.

Re: Newbie Mercruiser TRS Drive Problem

I can get the lower unit into forward, but i'm still having a problem with the collar looking deal the comes from the upper drive unit to spline on the lower unit shift shaft. It stays in the down position, and can spline in what seams like 2 positions. Is that normal? or should i be taking off the upper drive unit, and reassmble from scratch?
But when I do get the thing together, I only have forward and nuetral then the shifter starts to bind, and before forcing it, I then remove the lower unit, and everything is free again. Is that just a cable adjustment issue?

start from scratch - make sure propeller is engaged and the shift shaft is facing forward

Re: Newbie Mercruiser TRS Drive Problem

Sorry, I thought you had the complete drive removed.

Ok the piece thats hanging down is called the shift shaft coupler. Yes, it will spline in two positions (180 degrees or half a circle). If you look on the drive you will be able to see where the coupler mates into the slot of the shift shaft. The mating part of the "coupler" has a long end and a short end, the short end (when in the correct position) faces forward. Put a librial amount of heavy grease (wheel bearing grease) on top of the coupler then push it up into the slot of the shift shaft (the grease will hold the coupler in place while you install the lower drive). You still have to have the lower drive in forward.

Hope this helps.
