Hello,
I just purchased an awesome Chrysler 14' boat from Ebay and it came with a Johnson motor. I need help identifying it and if it is worth fixing.
The Model number is: RDS-25D
and the Serial number is: 2361458
It is a two cylinder engine and says "super sea-horse" on the side of the cover. I think it may be siezed. I tried to pull the motor through, after taking the spark plugs out, and it won't budge.
I love the boat and would like to repair the engine, but not sure how much and how available parts are. Or, should I put a new/rebuilt motor on it?
Any help and/or advice would be great.
thanks
Mike in Michigan.

That is a 1963 40HP Johnson, Mike.

Any good decision on repair/rebuild/replace needs to include why it is seized.

Odds are that unless you have a good manual and experience and do all the work yourself replacing with a similar age/model would cost a lot less than rebuild.

Cost of repair depends on why it is siezed. Could be anything from just sitting too long, a pretty easy fix, to major component failure that would require at least a major overhaul.

Thanks for the quick response JB!
I'll think it over and decide if I have the time to try a do it your self fix or maybe go with the replace it option.

Is the throttle on slow and the shift in neutral? A safety interlock prevents pulling the recoil if in gear and high throttle setting.
