Hi all: I'm new to the forum and need some help with a boat puchase.

Right now I have a choice between:

Boat A: 1993 Lund 16' Alum Boat 25 HP Evenrude electric start motor swivel seats depth/fish finder shorlander trailer $3000-may get it for 2800. This seems to be a WC-16 Deluxe, has a floor and walk-thru second seat

Boat B: 1974 Lund Aluminum fishing boat 35hp Johnson Motor. Asking $1999.00-would also get new in box trolling motor for 2000, not sure what model this is, because the 1974 catalog doesn't have a 16' with a bow deck-looks like a S18 Big Resorter, but the guy says its 16', not 18'.

OK Lund experts, what say you?

THANKS!

Hard to tell much with the limited pictures of the second Lund. Though the second one looks wider like maybe it's an S model or Alaskan. does the second one also have the flat floor in it?

Lunds being what they are I would have no reservations about buying a 1974. I do think the asking price for both of them is at the very high end though. Boat A will be quite underpowered with a couple people and full gear.

The 93 has a floor, the 74 does not.

I also have a line on a 1989 Pike 16D with a 45 hp merc for 4K. Seems like a real nice boat, but 4K is a bit out of my budget--could maybe stretch it.

The 93 is closest in actually value. I'd probably offer 2500.00 and walk if I was refused. The 89 is overpriced if the motor is more than 10 years old. Ethanol fuel is gonna be an issue for all three boats so take into consideration the cost of the upgrades for that.

At those prices...I'd walk away from BOTH of those rigs. $3k will get you an absolute TON of boat in this market. These little fishing rigs are always overpriced IMO.

Assuming the motors run flawlessly, those boats aren't worth more than $1500 IMO

This winters boat prices barely moved off seasonal. People aren't selling their boats because they're tired of them like the we're in past years. A lot of people are asking top dollar because they need to put food on the table and pay more important bills. This is the wrong economy for boat buying. Without a lot of luck you're not going to find that "Just get the dang thing out of my garage" boat at the prices we were used to.

If people are selling to put food on the table, then that DOES make it a buyer's market. There is a glut of boats for sale right now. You can't put food on the table by overpricing a boat and having it NOT sell.

When people are desperate for cash, they are not likely going to refuse a reasonable offer.

Thanks for the advice guys. I've got boat fever and may need to chill a bit. Problem is, I'm in Montana trout country, not many little fishing rigs like this around.

What's the deal with ethanol fuel and the old motors?

How about this boat? This is more boat, newer and more money. Offer $3500 or is that still too much?

I have a 1989 Lund fishing boat for sale. Pike model 16D. 45 HP Mercury motor, live well, trolling motor, Eagle electronics, EZ loader trailer. $4000

Re: Newbie needs help with boat choice:1993 or 1974 Lund 16' boats

CrawPappy, I'm not in your market and the local market is what's really going to dictate the price. In the area I am in I would have to agree that all those prices are at or above what I would concider top dallor. Lunds do hold their value but those are still steep.

Agree that in my area A. & B. are in the $15-1600.00 range and $3000.00 for the Pike 16D though if it had a 89 50hp Johnson/Evenrude on it I would concider $3500.00 tops. This past winter I past on a Pike 16D that the asking price was $1600.00 that needed an engine. Trailer was nice, boat was very nice. I just couldn't locate an engine at the time or I probably would have bought it. Point is that Merc is not worth $2500.00

I just recently seen another S-14 DLX listed locally for $4000.00 It did not have the optional side console and only a 25hp, also did not have any fold down seats as mine does. My 1st thought was good luck with that! I would be hard pressed to get $2000.00 for mine. So I don't know what kind of advice we can give as far as a fair price offer. Again, local market value and what are you willing to pay for one.

BTW, I have a sister in Roundup and another in Lewiston. Myself, saying put in Wisconsin.

Old motors, ethanol and old fuel lines. A lot of the old fuel lines are not ethanol resistant and they brake down and foul up the carbs.

Here's a Lund example. http://chicago.craigslist.org/nwc/boa/2939433221.html
A Sylvan. http://milwaukee.craigslist.org/boa/2890954563.html
Another Sylvan. http://chicago.craigslist.org/wcl/boa/2919908807.html
A Tracker. http://rockford.craigslist.org/boa/2939064602.html

Still all of those are over priced also IMO.

CrawPappy,

Just to let you know I just spent a couple hours on graigslist today and from what I've seen today that even though I know it's spring and the beginning of boating season it appears that boat prices are up in general $500.00 to $1000,00 over this time last year for the same boats. Good luck in your hunt! I would be interested to see what you find.

Re: Newbie needs help with boat choice:1993 or 1974 Lund 16' boats

I just missed a 1984 Pro Pike, redone floor, 35 Johnson for 2600. I'm "this close" to finalizing the deal on the 93 WC-16 Deluxe, 93 25 hp Evinrude for 2600.

Yeah, I cant seem to find a super sweet deal for 3 K, but I'm in MT and there are not many around. If I was in MN or somewhere, I would have more to look at and choose from.

I've got to get this boat and get it tested out as I'm headed to Northern SK to fish in June. Seems like these 16" Lunds are a pretty standard fishing boat for Canada. I think the WC-16 Deluxe will be good because its light, simple, but it has a floor and a walk-thru instead of a second bench, and bigger than a 14 that I think is too small. Its got the 65" beam, wish it had the 73" beam, but oh well...

So I'm going to snag it and someday maybe I'll upgrade to something like a Rebel or a Fury when I can take my time and hunt for a sweet deal.

BTW, max recommended hp is 25 hp.

Re: Newbie needs help with boat choice:1993 or 1974 Lund 16' boats

I fish medium to large-medium waters in Ontario Canada. I just purchased (delivery in next 4 weeks) my third Lund - - sold last one before Winter. I made my buying decision on my future use, the fish species targeting, and waters I will be on.

If you are after trout and small waters my opinion is buy on the small size, with light weight as you will be in/out of some iffy launch sites. Also the old 2-stroke motors were not designed for these new e-fuels so an issue on how they will burn / operate in those old motors. You could even have issues with the oil/gas mixes and lubrication.

I agree if someone is offering to sell their boat rig at the start of fishing season and they do not have the replacement boat on the property or on order they are trying to free up capital. So offer a low number and if they say "NO" walk away. If they comeback with a comment or counter-offer - - now you have a negotiation. An asking price is a starting point for the purchase discussion.
