Ok so picked up very used 88 bayliner. First registered boat I must add. I had been out 5 times or so with diffrent problems almost each time. "welcome to world of OMC"
I hurry back to launch site for bills game sunday at 4 and caught some rocks bad... stalled boat as well as horrible slam. Got boat back still moved good and not much shimmy but. Inspection shows prop is done or needs rebuild. It was al. I have heard of checking propshaft for runout. What is runout.... and how do I check? Thanks

Yes new to boats and will get finder or depth all in time.

That is just checking to see if the shaft is bent. If you have excess to a micrometer it will let ya know if it is bent.

Ok so i got prop fixed at a local marine shop... Put it on and went out on the river... Lost about 2000 rpm's .... Runs fine other than that.... Maybe goesthru a bit more gas but... Why such a loss? And obvious loss of top speed

the lower drive is like a rear diff. in a car. it works or it doesn't. is there noise that wasn't there before?unless a bearing is binding there isn't any reason to drop rpm unless prop wasn't put back to original specs. i would try another prop first.same size as old one

Erie, I agree with Bond-o, even if the prop shop used the wrong pitch block to fix your prop it is almost impossible to change the RPM by 2,000 RPM. I would look for the problem somewhere else than the prop. But styles idea is not bad, try another prop close to the same pitch and see what RPM you get.
