Newbie question -- fuel filter install - which direction?

Replacing the fuel filter in a Rochester 2 barrel marine carburetor. I did not pay attention when I removed the old fuel filter. Which direction does the hollowed end face (see picture)? Hollowed end out toward fuel line or in toward carb?

I am so grateful to all the great help this forum provides. Thanks!

Ayuh,..... The open end collects the junk, the spring pushes against the flat end,...
