This is my first boat with an outboard motor(2002 Merc 150 saltwater edition). Unfortunately it did not come with a manual. Thank God for this site!

My question is that there is this port or what looks to be an attachment on the back of the motor (has a blue ring around it). It does have a shut off lever also. What is it for? Should I leave it open or closed when boating?

Thanks in advance for all the help!

That looks like a garden hose type "quick disconnect" I just put one of these on my pressure washer. Leave the valve closed when you are running the engine; then hook up a hose and open the valve to flush your engine.

Re: Newbie question on Merc 150

Hey thanks for the reply!!!! I actually found the sticky for the Merc Manuals.

Another question I have is......would it be sufficient just to fill up the remote oil tanks or would I actually have to open the cowl and fill the tank in there?

I don't even know how to cowl. Lol!!!!

Re: Newbie question on Merc 150

I think the tank on the inside is only used for emergencies by the motor. The motor only draws from the inside tank if the remote tanks are running very low and/or dry of oil. I would keep them full as well.

The Merc "Salt Water" Edition 150 is a nice motor. I see quite a few of these motors down here in Florida. I had one of these screamers on a bass boat, and it was a great motor for me.
