Newbie Question-Outdrive Operation

We just purchased our first boat and we are learning as we go. It's a 1968 Hydroswift with a Mercruiser 120, 4 cyl I/O power train.

Today's question is: the outdrive controller (up by the steering) has three buttons UP Down/In Out (the middle button has both down & in on it). The UP and Down is obvious but what is the In and Out? What does it do and what is the purpose/benefit of each?

in only button is down
in/out button only is trim
in/out button + out button is trailer.... full up

looks like number 1 would suit you well....

many times on these old 1 drives. the in/out button don't work. there's a switch that fails. to get around it. ya just use the middle and top button for trailer.. just don't go to far up... use judgement....
