I recently purchased a 1981 Bayliner W/ 125 Force also 1981. Got a great deal on boat I think.

Here's my problem :

Idled out of no wake about five minutes. Throttled up to 3800 rpm for about five minutes.
Motor shut off and would not restart. Checked motor and it was really hot. No Alarm sounded.
A good amount of steam came from engine area.

I have checked the following.
Compression #1-100 #2-95 #3-(0) #4-100
Head Gasket has no visible signs of crack or burn.
Alarm is not hooked up.
Water pump impeller is good.
No restictions in inlet to pump.
T-Stat ??? it's there.

My question is on a two stoke 125 Force engine. once I replace Head Gasket,T-Stat, Impeller and still have no compression. Where should I go from there. I am just preparing myself for the infamous "What's Next"

Re: Newbie Question

If the engine was not run with the proper oil/gas ratio then it is likely you burned the piston in # 3. The rings are probably siezed in the piston. Remove the head and examine the cylinder walls. I would bet that # 3 is scored up. If this is the problem you will have to get that cylinder boared and probably a new piston. When you get it running re-attach the alarm!

you asked :(
Bob

Re: Newbie Question

Yes you are right on the money with this. What I can't uderstand is I know the amount of oil added was proper amount. I have alway's ran my engines just a touch over.

Can you please tell me what I will need to get started. Also where can I find the best deal on parts.

Do you recommend a complete overhaul ???

Ironicly I was a Technician for Chrysler for 18 years, but NO 2 stroke exp at all....

Mark (Lake Texoma)

Re: Newbie Question

The problem may have been started LONG before you got the boat/motor and it finally gave out.

The motor is 21 yrs old your choice on how much to spend on it. Repairing the bad cylinder may be the cheapest way out.

Check right here on this web site for parts or check around for a used motor. People are always outgrowing the Force outboard and one might be had cheap on ebay. I would weigh that $$$$ against a completely re-built powerhead.

Being a former tech for chyrsler should help you if you decide to do the work yourself. Get the shop manual and go for it. Allot of guidance is available from the good folks here. Be sure to post the exact topic title instead of "newbie question" people respond better.

Bob

FishNFoos,

It's decision time, the others gave you great advice. If you repair it, I would do it as cheaply as possible. You do not have an engine here with a great resale value.

You might be surprised at what you might get for the parts on e-bay, if you decide to part it out. It will be worth much more in parts than as a whole.

Sorry for the bad news! :(

Re: Newbie Question

Thank You,

I read back through the arcives only to find Force Motors are really prone to heating problems. I have decided to tackle this problem myself. I inspected the cylinders very well and it looks as if the ring is broken. Only slight damage to the cylinder wall.

As I was taking apart the exhaust boot I found inside what looks like an additional gromet(burned). Very hard , easy to tell this has been there for a while. I suspect this was the restriction that possibly caused some of the problems.

Again Thank You and I will be calling on this forum for assistance in the proper manner.

Mark ( It's just not cool pulling into the dock with a trolling motor )
