Newbie Questions about buying older CC

I'm looking at a 1978 CC 210 Lancer inboard with 350/250 Thermo-Electron GM. It's a single owner with all records and has been stored indoors for a majority of life. Approximately 650+ hours on motor. Appearance is great and claims no major repairs or issues. Asking 6500, without trailer.

I've got years of boating experience as a 'user', not much as a repairman (but do have solid mechanical skills) with an '86 18' Cheetah. What would i be getting myself into with a boat like this? With this many hours, is this due for major overhaul? Like the boat due to size, small aft cabin for kid, and its a CC (have a '67 23' Lancer but to much of a project now to rehab).

650 hours is not worn out if the motor oil was changed regularly. The records should indicate that. Salt water use is another issue. Is the motor a fresh water cooled system ?

You could do an oil analysis. Probably around $50.00. Compression check would be good, too. If it's a vee-drive I would not want it but that is my preference. Hope this has helped.

I'm not sure about the watercooling with that particular motor. The oil analysis is a good call, I use that on my track car and it's really helpful to see what's going on inside.
What's the issue with a vee-drive? And how do i tell if this has it?
I've also read other recomendations to hire a marine surveyor (?). I understand the logic, someone who knows boats well performs an inspection on your behalf, but how do I find one? Is there a certification for these guys? Surely it's more than the crusty old guy that's been hanging around the docks for years...or is it?
