I just bought a used lower unit for my 1961 75HP Evinrude and I have a few questions about it. First off it was setup to be an extended shaft so I got a short shaft to convert it, but while I was taking it apart yesterday I noticed a few things.

First off should there have been oil in the water pump? There wasn't a lot but there was some in there. When I saw the lower unit it was laying down and I have no idea how long it had been like that.

The water pump impeller I pulled out of the waterpump is bigger than the one I bought for it but it still fits inside the housing and in order to line it up with the shaft the fins do have to bend a little and push up against the side walls, will this work?

Once I have pulled the shaft I can see down into the gearcase, should i be able to see oil? Should I be able to turn it over and have some pour out? I was told that the lower unit had just had a fresh oil change and I can't see any oil down through that hole.

Lastly does anyone know how to go about getting a replacement tittle? This boat belonged to a friend of my dads and he gave the boat to us a while back but he had lost the tittle so in order for me to register the boat I think I'm going to need to get a duplicate tittle.

Thanks for all your help.

Re: Newbie questions

you need a manual, and bad!!!!

all of those questions couldve been answered easily by mr.seloc or clymer

as for the water pump with oil, if it had ben laying on its side for some time, it could have been lower unit fluid draining out of a badly sealed unit. coulda been lots a things...

Re: Newbie questions

the impeller fins i believe are suppose to be bent to make a tight seal like a check valve so the water can pump upwards

Re: Newbie questions

1. New impeller fins are straight. They will form to the housing to make a tight seal. Make sure you have the direction right.

2. Oil in the pump. It may be OK if the unit was on its side for a long time. However, I suspect the shift shaft and/or drive shaft seals need to be serviced.

3. The oil is serviced by the drain and fill holes on the side of the lower unit. You will want to wait to fill it once it has been reistalled.

Once reinstalled, run the engine in the water, and check the lube. If it is milky, the lower unit will need a reseal.

Re: Newbie questions

Thanks for the replies. I Just have a few more things I want to confirm. This lower unit should use 80/90 marine gear lube and the motor should use NGK B8S plugs or equivalent, right? Anyone know where I can get a new timing belt? I haven't seen any listed at any of the online sites. I'm not 100% sure I'll need one right at this point but the motor has been sitting outside for about 7 years now and I'm afraid it might have gotten dry rotted.

Re: Newbie questions

The 80/90 is fine as long as it is marine.

Use ONLY Champion plugs in John/Rudes. Many others here will second that opinion.

Your John/Rude dealer can get the belt.

Re: Newbie questions

The timing belt list for about $46.00. Check with this site first. If it is not available here, I have a couple left in my remaining stock which I will discount one to $27.00. If interested, contact me at my address below.
