'New here and I'm sure you guys get wayyyy too many of this type of question (not unlike every other forum for every other enthusiast on the net)

Yup, pretty much brand new to boating other than a wee 14' sidewinder that I used for a couple - just long enough to catch the bug ;0) My wife loves boating and has just been tolerating my 4 wheeling bug for the last 15 years. I'm getting too beat up for wheeling so it's time to get into floaties and we'll have a lot more fun this way I think.

So my first question here is:

<drumroll>

2000'ish 1952 or 2052 Capri? (13,000 - been in the salt - vinyl getting tired - 5.0 - no extras)

orrrrrrrrrrrr

1990 Glastron Sierra 20' (7800 firm - no salt - fresh water exchanger - looks clean in pics - 5.0 - couple extras like sea bq)

It's about 7 hours away but I'm toying with jumpin in the truck right now to go see it - opinions wanted!!!!!!

Thanks in advance folks - looking forward to getting to know this place :)

Rob, as I'm sure you've seen, we get a lot of these "which boat" questions.

There really isn't any way to answer your "which boat" question other than "it depends." With used boats EVERYTHING depends on condition and condition alone drives price. Unlike with cars where mileage can give you a solid price bracket, with boats the same thing is not possible.

Also, what you think about the boats matters. Once you narrow down what you like and then can give us the rundown and pictures of a specific boat, we can give a lot better feedback as far as what to check, watch out for, and potential price ranges.

By all means, go look at the Glastron. It's very, very important with used boats to look at as many as possible because that's how you learn about different models and get an eye for spotting condition problems.

put the two pictures next to each other and what are you more drawn too? take that boat.

also i'd recomend a marine surveyor if you know little about boats, i did and it saved me from buying a clapped out engine.

I hear ya

It's now between two glastrons after speaking to a good and boat edumacated buddy of mine ;0)

Found a 91 20' cuddy with 5.0 replaced 100 hrs ago - little more money but a 2 yr old trailer so might look hard at this one http://www.boatdealers.ca/usedboats...0/74497/glastron-2000-used-boat-for-sale.aspx as opposed to this one only http://bc.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles...N-SIERRA-20ft-7800-00-firm-W0QQAdIdZ304592863

Thanks for the reply :0)

I don't see any obvious red flags from the pictures and descriptions. It's really down to you seeing them and test driving them if possible.

As both boats are in Canada, I can't really comment on the prices and how close they are to market reality. Since I am in MN, I will say that in general boat prices in Canada are higher compared to here in the midwest US.

In general, here it the US it's been a buyers market for the last 4 years and especially so in the fall and winter. I wouldn't be afraid to make offers on either boat, despite the fact that one says firm on price. If he doesn't want to winterize and store the boat, then he'd have to be flexible to some degree because that's hundreds of dollars in expenses right there.

NEWBIE: Don't get excited over anything. Your emotions will be your biggest obstacle.
