newbie with 2 repower questions

I have only been a paddler until recently when i aquired 2 alum boats the first beeing a 1984 17 ft bass tracker with a 50 horse mercury ( that buuba tinkerd with badly ) and a 14' by 34" flatbottom and a 15 horse johnson ( that also had been messed with) now my question is could i run like a 25 horse insted of the 50 horse on the tracker ? im not wanting to win any races just get on the water and how underpowerd would a 5 horse be on the flatbottom it just going to be a small river creek duck boat ? the reason i ask is a buddy of mine has both motors siting under his shop for a steal of a price . thanks

the 5 will not be horrible, but the 25 will be. 17ft is a lot of boat. i would say it is rated for more than a 50 hp.
