Hello community,

My first post!, Im a newbie with boats and I just got an old 1980 Crestliner Apollo with a Mercury 2 Stroke 140HP that is giving me an idle problem. First of all I been trying to find info about the boat and the motor and no luck, I sent an email to Crestliner and they never reply me back. The serial number of the motor is: 5552504, even here in the motor database when I punch that number the system say that dont recognize it. Well, im assuming is a 1979 because is the closest serial number to mine.

When I start the motor they work fine (dont start from the first crank but using the choke button and moving the throttle stick/lever forward a littlebit they start) at that time they idle normal, I can run it and in my opinion run perfectly fine, then after run maybe for 5 minutes if I stop when put the stick/lever in Neutral the motor go off and there is no way to get it start again in neutral, I need to disengage the "transmission" and move the stick foward and I can get it to work but is a pain accelerate it and move very fast the stick/lever back and foward to engage the transmission and be able to move again. If I stop using it for maybe half hour and try to start it again everything is fine but after warm up same issue again.

My first thought was maybe the control cable from the stick/lever to the motor but make non sense because the problem is when the motor is warm/hot.

I have some basic knowledge with cars carbs but nothing with boats. I imagine maybe the issue is with an adjustment in the carb?

Any idea? I appreciate any help.

That motor looks to be a 1979. Does it have a distributor and a single coil or six coils?

Any idea if that motor is overheating, after you run it a while? Any idea when the waterpump was last serviced? I am reticent to recommend adjusting the carbs or timing synch, until the cooling system is proven to be working properly.

Howdy, I have not open the motor yet, Im going to do it tomorrow because im going to change spark plugs. I will check for the coil and post it here. I have no idea when the water pump was serviced, I guess I will need to do it by my self soon BUT when I run it seems like is good because the motor throw the water out by the water outlet pretty hard like normal.
