Bought it knowing there were fuel problems, but seems now, that more is involved. Mercury outboard engine. Serial #A931265. Someone has scratched off the hp rating on the engine cover, just left the zero on each side. There is the date(?) 12 22 68 handwritten on the cylinder head in aluminum looking paint. Making the assumption that this may be the assembly date. There is a plastic label with timing specs for M60. The engine is 3 cylinder and 2 carb model. From all the charts that I have seen it appears this could be either a 50 or 60 hp engine manufactured in 1986. Apparently the serial number and hp are needed to get accurate parts for repair. The starter has the number 50 44369 and I need a new starter drive gear. Also need the carb gasket kits. Bailing wire is being used to hold some of the intake parts in place and a cable terminates with bailing wire holding it in place but not connected to anything. Can't imagine what else has been mickey moused around on this engine but time will tell. Seller thought it was a 60 hp model. Any help greatly appreciated. JH

Re: Newbie with first boat

I belive it's a 1986 50 HP by the serial number but could be a 87 60 HP, it don't matter for carb parts, so when its apart get the main jet sizes and either you can look them up and tell the HP from the jet size or we can.

Laddies: The chart that I looked at said the 87 60hp 3 cyl engines started with S/N# B110789. Wouldn't that make this an 86 50hp or 60hp?? Not looking to start an argument since I'm so new at this, got lots to learn. Thanks JH

The build book from mercury marine that I have gives the starting serial numbers for. 45 HP 86--A914859, 87--B110789, 88--B238644. 60 HP 86--A197392, 87--B110789, 88--B239242. Your choice.

Re: Newbie with first boat

Laddies: Right, that's the same numbers that I found when searching, but the 45 hp was listed as a 4 cyl engine. If true, that's not applicable. For the 50hp 3 cyl the beginning S/N was A912478 for 86 and B110789 for 87. My S/N is A931265 and would be after the beginning 86 number and before the beginning 87 number. So is it correct to say its an 86 model? The same numbers are recorded for the 60 hp 3 cyl engine and so that is also a possibility. Right? Either a 86 50hp 3 cyl or a 60hp 3 cyl?? The interesting part is that iboats numbers don't seem to jive with these. They give some GXXXXXX numbers for the starter drive gears. iboats wants a definitive year model and hp rating to find the right part and sent me to Mercury to get it. Waiting for a reply from Mercury. Is there some other way to determine hp since my stickers were removed (only the first number) and only the 0 (zero) was left on both sides of the engine cover. Some one thought they were being cute, I guess. I mentioned that there is a label on the carb air cover that gives the timing specs for the 60M. Would this mean a 60 hp Mercury? Anybody with an 86 50hp 3cyl having that sticker? Does it also say 60M or maybe 50M. Is there a stamp someplace on the engine giving hp rating? desparate and rambling.. Thanks JH
