Had the boat 2 days, went to start it and it tried to turn over twice. Then I turn the key and nothing...no click, no nothing. There is a toggle switch directly under the key ignition that I did pull up but it does not stay there. Is that a kill switch and did I already break something???

What motor?

Toggle switch is a momentary switch for the choke. Make sure the control lever is in neutral. Sometimes it helps to rock it back and forth a little while attempting to crank the motor (neutral safety switch involved). Not sure about the power pilot, but believe there should be a warm up lever that you engage for cold starting.

25 hp Evinrude.
I have the warm up lever raised and it's in Neutral.
How do I know if my neutral safety switch is bad?
also do I hold the toggle switch up while turning the key?
thank you so much for your quick response oldboat1

Holding the toggle switch up should keep the choke plate closed. But hearing the solenoid in the back doesn't always mean the choke plate is fully closing, as is required. May need to check that. The neutral safety switch is easy to test once you get to it. Get a diagram for the power pilot and look for it -- think it's in the front of the unit. If you have continuity when the switch is operated, it works.

Make sure the connections are clean and shiny. Start with the battery cables. And of course you need a fully charged battery.

What year motor are we talking about here? May have a neutral safety switch on the motor or it may be in the control---or both. I'm betting it is on the motor and it is burned up by careless jump starting, or out of adjustment. Both very common.

Honestly I dont know what year motor. Got the boat in on trade 3 days ago and of course it ran fine when I got it. I took the Power Pilot control box apart and I see the neutral safety switch. I tried clamping the switch down then hooked up the battery for a second but there is still nothing when I turn the key. Stupid question but how do I find out the year of the motor?

Year is by the model number.-----There may well be a switch on the motor itself.----Pictures of motor and area where shift linkages are will help.
