I am trying to remove the stern drive on a 1981 Thundercraft I/O 120 Mercruiser 4 cyl Manual shows it to be easy or at least simple, how ever, I have the stern drive half the way off and it seems jammed or stuck on something inside manual shows nothing that it would catch on. any suggestions? Please help! :(

I had this problem on a cobra, turns out my gimble bearing froze to my driveshaft. You said you have it half way off though. Mine was frozen from the start

How Far is "half the way off" ???????
Can you get your hand down in around the gimbal bearing area at the back of the motor ??????
Of Course, The Obvious, Is the Shifter in Forward ??????

Bondo I have read many postings from you. From what I have read seems you have some good advise to offer. The stern drive is off far enough to see the threads, barely, behind the stern drive. I think its in foreward, why?

I'd Start by Unbolting the Engine....
And, There's 6(six) 5/8s nuts to remove, 2(two) 9/16s nuts to loosen,+ 2(two) to remove.....
With the Shifter in Forward,+ the Tilt-Rams disconnected, the outdrive Should just about Fall Off the back of the Boat...!!!
IF it's Aligned Properly....!!!!

I think its in foreward, why?
You Do Have A Manual..!!??????

you need to have the shifter in forward so the shift lever will be pointed srtaight back and will allow the outdrive to slide all the way out. i've had it happen as well where it wasn't just a case of the unit slipping right off. If, and only if (this can't be stressed enough) your in full forward gear and the unit won't silde right out you may need to be a little more persuasive with it. Get a large block of wood and put it under the skeg (right under the unit)and just for good measure make sure your in full forward gear once more. then lift the unit a few inches off the block of wood and drop it a couple of times if this doesn't work drop it from a little higher. And as a side note if you don't have a manual you should get one there are sooo much help.
