Is it just me, or is it just not that smart to be 35 miles offshore with such a small boat. I have a 20 ft boat and would not even think of that. I would like to see how the boat was equipped. It sounds like the boat flipped unexpectedly, hence no radio call.

Takes some balls to be out that far, at night, in a 20ft boat.

I run 35 miles off the Oregon coast for tuna, but always with a float plan, a buddy boat, a sea anchor, VHF with handheld backup, and all hands wear PFDs all the time. My boat is a 22 foot power dory.

Well, you might do it if there was no weather scheduled, you had a second boat along, and you had excellent radios. In this case, though, there was weather and no second boat.

I sincerely hope the other guys are found alive.

I just pray that they get home, there is another thread here with an update that one survivor has been found thus far....Smart to be out there? maybe not...

I read that this weekend a small craft (canoe?) rolled over at Lake Okeechobee here in Florida, one adult male and tragically a 7 year old girl drowned....You can never assume that you are 100% safe on the water, any water

Just because they where found 35 miles out doesn't mean a thing. Not sure about the Gulf, but where I boat along the Atlantic coast it doesn?t take long to drift 10-15 miles.

It is not like tsunami hit them, I am curious as to why not a distress call. What went wrong, and I am sure it is number of bad decisions that got them to this point. Also, why leave the capsized boat? Use something to tie yourself on, I am thinking the boating knowledge was not there.

Where they sleeping?
I have heard stories about a big wave hitting boats, when they are sleeping, and when you wake up, the boat is already capsized, and there is not much you can do. This happened to a ship on deadliest catch, one of the 7 or so on a board lived. He said he woke up and the ship was side ways, 90 degrees. maybe a rouge wave.
