While still trying to solve my high RPM issue.
I'm going to try another set of spark plugs.
I noticed that Don S does not like Champion plugs!! So I bought
NGK BPR6EFS, to replace the Champion RS12YC.

These guys come pre-gapped at ~.030", my boat specs at .045" (5.7GSi PEFS) (Vortec Heads)

Whats weird is the upward angle of the ground electrode resulting from increasing the gap.
Is everyone here (That use NGKs) comfortable with that, Im not.

I don't recall those plugs being gapped at .030. Are you sure about the part number?

Re: Ngk bpr6efs Weirdness!

Merc had been recommending the BPR6EFS as a replacement for the AC MR43LTS for years with no problems, and AC is what came in your engine originally from Volvo. Volvo used to recommend the AC plug as well (it comes with a .035 gap preset) before they went strictly champions and no longer even mention what came in it OEM (Which really sux BTW).

Now the AC and NGK plugs have had no problems in the Merc and Volvo and OMC when they were using them, but now you alone have a concern that really doesn't seem to be a problem for anyone else.

If you don't like the angle of the NGK or the AC, then stick with your Champions.

I DONT like Champions, they were the only thing available on that particular day I decided to buy a set.

I don't remember the MR43LTS or the R43LTS angling that far up. So Im going back to AC!!

I was questioning the fact that the NGKs have to be stretched so far!!

Repalced plugs with bpr6efs on the 5.0gi. Idles perfectly on the trailer, not in the water yet. Not gapped right from the box, had to regap myself to 1.1 mm.
The manual advice against using other than the original champions... (?)

This is the only issue I've ever disagreed with Don about. I like Champion plugs and use them on many different applications. Gap them according to the engine specs. NGK are very good too and you will have no problems. I doubt the plugs are making the engine rev any higher. You need to look elsewhere.

I have found the solution, thank you NGK USA for speaking with me.:

HEI equipped engines requiring a .045" gap must use bpr6efs 11. The 11 denotes an extended gap architecture.
They come pre-gapped at .044"

"High RPM" problem, meaning lack of power at higher RPMs. I have another thread with that issue, sorry.

I have ACs coming, also notice the NGK TR6 are the identical specs to the BPR6ES, including heat range, but use the "V-Groove" technology, and come pre-gapped at .040".

My issue increasing a .030 pre-gapped plug to .045, is knowing where the true gap occurs, as the ground electrode now points upwards. Theres now a .005" variation across the ground electrode to the center.
