Hi
On my Volvo Penta 5.0 GI PWTR from 1999, I have installed NGK R BPR5EFS Spark Plug.
Could you please inform if it is the correct Spark Plug for this engine ?
What should be the gap, according Volvo Penta Spark Plug 3851857 Gap 0.045?, or according NGK?
Thanks, Almeida

According to the link post your plugs should be AC- MR43LTS spark plugs with a .035 gap.

The NGK BPR5EFS translates to AC Delco R46LTS

Re: NGK Spark Plug

Hi. Thanks for yours answers,
The engine is 5.0 GI not GL.
According manual should use Volvo Penta Plug 3851857 or Champion RS12YC. Doesn’t refer AC Plugs.
So Champion RS12YC correspond to NGK BPR6EFS ??? and I have BPR5EFS.
Is real necessary to replace the Spark Plug or the difference is minor?
The Spark Plug BPR5EFS are new and the engine, apparently, works well.

The issue with using a cross-reference is there are no exact matches. Each manufacture will cross another manufactures part number with what they think is the closes match. The plugs are designed for a given design and the engine manufactures use the design and heat range to determine optimal performance. Using a plug with a lower heat range will reduce performance and can cause carbon build up. Using a plug with a higher heat range can cause high combustion temps and damage can result. That being said I found the following:

The Champion RS12YC list BPR6EFS and BPR5EFS and MR43TLS as cross references. No Volvo listing
Champion RS12YC - Alternative spark plugs

The NGK BPR5EFS list the Champion RS12YC but not the MR43TLS
NGK BPR5EFS - Alternative spark plugs

The AC MR43T not the TLS (no TLS listing) list the NGK6EFS
AC DELCO MR43T - Alternative spark plugs

Opinion: Looks like the 6EFS is one heat range hotter plug then the 5EFS. I look at it as a bit off the optimum based on the Champion, AC Delco and 5EFS all sync up. That being said it may not be enough to cause damage, but... always a but.. it's your engine. Since this is still my opinion only, if it was mine I would go to the lower heat range

Re: NGK Spark Plug

NGK's heat range numbering system is reverse of what one would think, so just be aware that 5 is hotter than 6.

That information can be found in the last link posted by AD.
