Well started with top fuel pump and had it off, clean and rebuilt in under 20 minutes. I thought I LOVE THESE MERCS.
Well that was short lived! Then I started to remove the lower pump. Well after taking off power cable and removing it from housing to move out of the way. I was luckily able to hand loosen the lower bolt holding fuel pump. YIKES AGAIN>. Well after finally getting it off. This one was not as clean. So I cleaned it and went to rebuild. Well the Merc dealer only had two rebuild kits left. Both from a different manufacturer. The first ones gaskets fit perfect. The second one in a white envelopes circle gaskets were alittle oversize for holes. I got them to work however I hope I did not damage one of the valves by initially trying to install both metel nipple face down. THey did not fit flush as Pin on housing pushed one up. I did not force and figured out that the one above the pin goes metel nipple side up. Well after putting toghether I put back on motor. Then spent 2 hours trying to 1/16 turn at a time get a open end wrench in to tighten lower bolt. I do not know if I got it tight enough. I guess when gas pours out I will know! Also hope I did not over tighten the other two to compensate. Am I missing something here or is this a common problem. Any hints at a better way!
Now to the VERY SUCKY part. while moving wires around I found out they were very brittle. the two orange wires near upper fuel pump basicly had insulation fall off. These I could easily probably re-wire. The bad one is the orange wire solinoid to wire harness plug. It also had insulation fall off. Now I am probably up a creek. I am sure this plug end and wires is a long ago disco part.
Anyone have any ideas?
Lastly I was able to buy the 5/16 push on brass fittings and 5/16 hose,. Another potential problems 1. Some fittings hard to get to. I think I have to drop starter to get to one. Also there is bigger curved fittings on ends of two fuel hoses. Are push on copys of these available like the others I bought?
PLEASE HELP> I am very distraught
Thank you.
Tod

When working on any thing that is 35 + years old, you need to use care in the disassembly and assembly process, you also need a good manual if not familier with the job, both will save alot of problems--Bob

Believe me, I was a carful as I could be. Just touching the insulation made it pop off. Also I had selco manaul but it makes no mention about lower bolt problem.

Glasspar, I can appreciate your manual problems some of them are not worth the paper they are written on, even the Merury manuals that are about a mile ahead of some of the aftermarket ones can be vague on some subjects--Bob

common for insulation to fall off like you described. The motor is old as, similar to mine. Ive been told that mercury used cheap wire in these donks, this is why it's so common.

I rebuilt my pumps too and the botton nut is hard to get to, a minature ratchett kit worked for me. If you think that was hard, try getting your three carbs off. Now, for a first timer, that's a task!

cheers

Re: Nightmare rebuilding 1250 lower fuel pump

Tengals, Loved your pics of restoration project. Luckily mine looks to have not been in salt.
I will go buy a mini ratchet set and try that. Your right about the carbs. I ran a can of seafoam thru and they seem to pump good gas and idle very well. I will leave them alone for know.
How about the impeller kit. Any words of wisdom there? Is it fairly simple.
I found the liquad black tape that I am going to apply to wires were coating chiped off. Temp fix until I get internal harness from dealer on this forum.
Thanks for the help everyone.!
My local boat mecanic said old mercs are JUNK. I want to prove him wrong!

old merc are definatly not junk. I love my old merc.
The impeller is not hard to change. 6 bolts and the lower unit drops down. Off with the top of the waterpump and replace the impeller. Be sure to check the pump housing for wear. All back together and your all set.

cheers

Your local mechanic has proven his lack of intelligence. He is entitled to his opinion, but he needs to keep it to himself. He could lose business like that. I go well out of my way to spread the word on people like that, they deserve everything they get coming when people stop showing up. It works, trust me....
