Nissan 18, 2006, cuts out randomly

Several times now my motor will run great, up on a plane, life is good.... then.... dies.

Just flat out stops, no stutter, no cough... nothing. Just dies. Will not restart, left stranded.

Wait a while, hour or two, and she starts and runs.

I am assuming electrical, and in fact have tested and found no spark on lower plug once BUT not consistent.

I have inspected the wiring, no obvious cuts/breaks. No corrosion, all parts dry.

I suspect it is the coil, but WHY? I have replaced the coil 2 years ago, similar situation, and now again???

Is there any other component that can cause such an intermittent issue, CDI? Plugs?

Thanks for any tips.

Is there any kind of cutoff built into the oil system, I know there is indicator, but is there also a cutoff? just brainstorming.

From your symptoms, and info you provided, could be a lot of things... Of course verify the basics -- fuel (especially vent), etc.

If it's an intermittent, fail-when-hot problem, it may well be an ignition part failing when hot. Any of 4 major parts could be involved with an ignition cutout -- exciter, trigger, cd, or coil. You will want a Factory service manual for testing values and procedures. And if you do determine that it's a fail-when-hot problem, you will want to troubleshoot while it is failing.

BTW, Emergency-condition ESG does not stop the motor -- it just prevents high speeds. That allows you to limp home. That information is in your owner's manual.

Well, got her running.

Flushed fuel and did notice water... new plugs, fresh fuel, started in 15 seconds.

I have learned a lesson on this one, just because it didn't sputter and cough before it died does NOT mean the problem isn't fuel.

I was working as if it had to be electrical, I have never had a motor that stopped dead cold from fuel... but I have now.

Took her out on the river today, ran like a sewing machine!!!

Thanks for the reply.

Re: Nissan 18, 2006, cuts out randomly

I am having the same problem with a 2004 50. I had the sol replaced last year. Today, first time out, ran like a top...ran a little rough heading home and I stopped the engine to check for water. When I tried to restart, I got nothing. No click, no sounds, nothing. Paddled and had the wife jump out and pull us to dock while I tried to figure out. Could this be overheating? Gonna give it a couple hours to cool then see what happens. Thanks.

It's electrical...Now you need to get out a multi-tester, a service manual and have at it.

What Elvin said... Plus... this needs a new thread. a TLDI 50 has nothing in common with a carbureted 18.
