Nissan 18hp knock

I recently bought a Nissan 18Hp 2 stroke. I am estimating 1985. The motor does run and idles Ok. I do get a fair bit of smoke and oil in the barrel that I am running it in. It does seem to have a slight knock and it seems worse when i give more throttle. My guess is that it is not properly timed. I did change plugs and used new fuel with extra stabil in it. Besides repair manuals where do I go to find timing setting instructions

Just the repair manual...The engine can't go out of time unless someone played with the adjustment rods....And a knock would almost certainly be related to mechanical failure rather than the timing.
