Nissan 40C - Rectifiers

Hi All,

I'm currently rebuilding a Nissan 40C, and in my pile of parts have two different rectifiers, and was hoping someone here could shed some light on them.

See Pic Below.

The first, ~2"x2.5"x1", was installed on the motor when I bought it. The second, ~1"x1"x1", I got attached with some used parts I bought for my starting circuit.

The guy I bought the motor from said that the larger one worked fine, but the smaller one looks more like the one in the Tohatsu shop drawings, and pics I've seen of other 40c's.

Anyone know if there is any functional difference between the two? Or know of functional specs for either?

Thanks much.

Re: Nissan 40C - Rectifiers

All bridge rectifiers work in the same manner, and are identical electrically, with the notable exception of current carrying capability and occasionally a minor efficiency difference, so, you should be OK either way. Of course, the bigger heat sink can dissipate more BTU's, so may well be capable of higher current-carrying capability before cooking a diode.

I think the smaller one is now the current issue and replacement on the 40 C frame.

A small caution should be made at this point for everyone who reads Paul's post and doesn't pay attention to the part where he says "Of course, the bigger heat sink can dissipate more BTU's, so may well be capable of higher current-carrying capability before cooking a diode." Bigger means that the $2.00 rectifier from Radio Shack you just suddenly thought of using instead of the $40.00 one from Stick It To You Marine would be a huge mistake. It's not just the heat from the current. It's also the heat from the engine block, the vibration from the engine and water/salt protection of the enclosure. Don't be penny wise only to spend money on a tow or loose a boating trip over non marine parts.

So very true. Proper Marine parts are a must.

Ask me about the guy who, wanting an upgrade to his low-output charging system, installed an "automotive" alternator on his gas inboard. Saved a bundle. But he failed to notice that the expensive marine component is sealed, while the automotive unit is not, and throws sparks. The insurance claim was phenomenal, as the boat was a total loss. Fortunately, all aboard survived the inferno.

Thanks for the info guys. As it turns out, I'm probably going to have to buy a new rectifer either way. I tested both of the ones the I have and cant get a reading off either one. Assumption is that the diodes in both are blown.
