Could be the oil itself. Have the engine run it's self diagnostic troubleshooting program to see if anything else is wrong.

Have been using Quicksilver,How is the self diagnostic test run?The maint that I do is things like, plugs ,water pump, jet pump bearings and seals, replace the starter. Is there a special tool needed to run this test? Thanks,Steve

You are using an incorrect oil type and you need a factory service manual to read the codes out of the engine.

Re: Nissan 40hp smoking @ startup

The Quicksilver oil is not designed to be used in any DFI engine. Basically it causes an incomplete burn and will clog up the injectors over time. Any oil formulated for a DFI will work. Bombardier, Mercury, Yamaha, Tohatsu, Nissan, plus many generic brands, have an oil that will work. Your injectors are probably shot at this point and your engine has swallowed a lot more carbon than it was ever meant to, but I doubt that any mechanical damage has occurred.

If it's 2 strokes TCW-3 oil for a carbed engine, go for it...

Probably oil inyection pump is having tech issues, you could disconnect, pre mix gas/oil 50:1 ratio to test directly. If doesn't smoke heavily on start ups, definitely a pump issue. Pumps are not eternal, do fail with long use.

Completely different engine from the TLDI. No injectors and the Quicksilver oil is fine. So, you could have a weak part in the ignition system, some dolt could have touched the oil pump adjustment screw or any one of a hundred other things could be wrong. I would run it by a dealer and have them check the thing out. When was the last time the carbs were correctly cleaned?

Thanks for all the info, will be checking both filters, new plugs, decarb it with sea foam, then go from there. The oil adj screw is fine as I am the only one taking the cowling off,I.E. to add oil the oil tank.
