I have read a few threads about simple part swaps to boost hp on detuned motors from the factory. I notice the 8hp and 9.8hp motors weight the same. Which led me to believe that the swap can be done? It will save about $130 on a new motor, so it would have to make sense as far as parts necessary as well to do the job.

If it's an NSF8A3, change to the appropriate 9.8 carb and you're done.

The correct part number will depend on your precise model and serial number. There are different linkages depending on whether you are remote or tiller, etc. For example, if you want to swap into an NFS8A3 MF or EF (3V2MB), you would order 3V2031002M CARBURETOR, F9.8A2/A3 $164.53, and the appropriate labor to install and setup the carb.

Are you still saving $130.00? Depends on what you paid for the 8.
