I have a 5hp Nissan outboard, ser.#NS5B #369-1 83968 that will not shut off when the kill switch key is pulled. I tried to ground out the coil & that did not work! The only way I can kill it is to pull the choke out all the way which certainly is not a good way to shut off an engine. Any ideas on this? I do not want to purchase new parts, i.e., coil, pick-up etc. just to find out that those items do not work. HELP!

The brown and black wires get shorted together to kill the CD. Black is supposed to be fastened to ground, so you are grounding out the brown wire to stop, opening brown from ground to run. If one of those wires is disconnected or broken, the stop switch will not work.

Engine stop switches don't last eternally, buy a new one if having problems shutting engine down.

Thank you for responding to my question. I replaced the kill switch & still have the same problem. In fact, that was the first item I replaced due to the fact that I live in San Diego and it's a salt water issue. I guess it's possible to have a defective switch! Any other ideas would be deeply appreciated. Thanks.

If you manually ground out the brown wire, does the motor stop?

PVANV,

It doesn,t matter what wire I short or ground out, it just keeps on going! It kind of reminds me of the energizer bunny!

If you ground the primary wire (small wire) of the coil, it will definitely stop.

If you ground the brown wire and it does not stop, you probably have a bad CD or cracked wire. Uncommon, to be sure. I have a used CD module for that motor if you need it.
