Nissan 6 Idles too fast

Hi all,
I recently got a brand new Nissan 6. It starts on the first pull with the choke knob pulled out. As soon as I push the choke back in it kills the engine unless I turn the throttle up until the triangle mark at least. The engine has done this since brand new, and has about 10 hours on it and still does it. I followed the break in guidelines as best as possible.

It will not idle at low rpms. According the manual it should idle at 1300 out of gear, but the best I can get is 2000 according to a Sendec Tach. When I want to turn the engine off, I just turn the throttle to the slowest position and the engine stalls immediately. This happens even when it is warmed up. Sometimes it will sputter along for a few seconds/minutes at reduced, but not idle, throttle before going out.

To shift into gear, I twist the throttle til the engine slows down, shift quickly, then I have to increase the throttle quickly before it stalls out. The problem is not the idle set screw setting the idle too high. It stops running well before the screw limit is hit.

Again, the engine is brand new. I put 10w 30 in it when brand new, and use 87 Octane gas. I haven't adjusted or messed with any settings or anything. It just seems like it is running to hot, and seems way to fast/noisy just to keep it going.

Sorry for the long post. Any ideas? If it isn't anything easy I will go to a dealer this week.

Just a thought - sounds to me like the low-speed part of the carb might be clogged. Even though it's fairly new, something could have caught in there.

I have an 03 Evinrude that wouldn't idle until I cleaned the carb. it doesn't take much to clog it up.

You are under warranty. Your idle circuit is not working. Could be a tiny bit of debris in there, possibly left over from manufacturing. Assuming your fuel has not varnished-up the idle circuit, there is some other problem that has disabled the idle circuit. At a minimum, the carb needs a thorough and proper cleaning; at most, the carb is bad and needs to be replaced. What does your dealer say?

Thanks for the info. Taking it in Monday. Looking at the carb is not something I am familiar with, plus it is under warranty.

Make sure that the shop is made aware that you had this problem from day one. The factory does not cover problems caused by bad gas, but the warranty does cover manufacturing defects, so if there is a tiny bit of debris in there from the factory, they should cover it. BTW, This kind of problem is why our shop tank tests every motor we sell, including the small ones. While this kind of problem is not common, it can happen, and we like to catch it before it causes a problem for the consumer.

Local shop got it fixed up fine, completely under warranty. Carb was not together right from the factory, a gasket was loose because a screw wasn't right. Great service.

Awesome, glad to hear yours was a simple (and covered) repair.

I had the exact same symptoms, but mine was due to me not running the gas out, and it gummed up the low speed passage. Be aware of that too, and don't leave gas in the carb for more than 2-3 days.

How tough was it to clear out the gummed up low speed passage? Did you do it yourself, and if so, what technique worked? My Honda 8 had low speed problems at end of summer (stalled routinely when put in gear), and I disassembled the carb, soaked all metal parts (incl the body) in solvent, and tried to blast it out with air as much as possible. Also cleaned the tiny hole in the end of the pilot jet with a strand of copper wire. I am installing all new fuel hoses, inside engine and also hose and bulb from external tank. Want to make sure I'm thorough before reassembling.

Probably not aggressive enough. In our shop, we use a real carb dip, such as Tyme, available in 1-gal. cans at auto parts stores. Lesser solvents just don't dissolve the varnishing well enough. Soak for 4 hours at room temperature. Less soak may not be effective, longer may start to attack the Factory coating on the metal.

Thanks, Paul (by the way, I - and I'm sure many others - really appreciate all the advice you give).

I used the carb cleaner you put into your gas tank, but obviously undiluted, and left it in there maybe a week (oops). I ended up getting all my new parts last week, so I reassembled the carb, water pump, fuel pump yesterday and fired it up in a garbage can full of water (lacking the garbage, of course). Seemed to work fine, once I realized the upper part of the water pump had not engaged the water tube, and I fixed that. Idled well, and stayed running in gear at idle, idle at about 1200 RPM. I think I was lucky - likely the problem was the tiny hole at the end of the pilot jet, which looked mostly or entirely blocked when I was able to inspect with a magnifier - a very thin copper wire strand cleared it. Fingers crossed for the summer.

I'm not sure. I thought I had a warranty issue, so I brought mine into a dealer. I got a call from the mechanic after he opened it up saying that it was a fuel issue (not warranty covered), and that they would only charge me $26 to clean it out.

I'm not sure exactly what he did, but it ran just fine afterwards.
