A mechanic at an outboard repair shop warned me that running an outboard alternator without a load on it will damage it. I have had outboards that I would periodically run without connecting the cable to my battery and it did not seem to cause any problem. Does anyone have "official" advice as to whether this is a safe practice?

The Tohatsu can run without the battery; just don't allow the leads to short, or the rectifier will probably get cooked. Many older models from other brands would get damaged if the battery was not connected, but that's not a factor on the Tohatsu MFS6.

Thanks for the information! There is nothing listed in the owners manual addressing this Either a manufacturer oversight or it just doesn't matter. Sounds like it just doesn't matter.

Yep. Just is a non-issue.
