Nissan 6hp 4cycle: How much gear lube?

In the process of winterizing my Nissan 6hp 4cycle, I changed my gear lube. I followed the instructions in the manual and ended up using less than 10 ounces to fill the gearcase even after expelling all the air. The manual reported the capacity to be 12 ounces. Is this normal? Is the manual wrong in stating the amount required?

1. The correct level is when the fluid is at the height of the upper hole, regardless of how much fluid you put in.
2. You never get all the old lube out, so you may (will) use less than the capacity.
3. Where does it say 12 ounces for the LU? Not in any owner's manual I have at hand... We figure to use about 10 ounces for the F4/5/6, including what dribbles out with the bubbles.

BTW on a related topic, NEVER add the 15.2-oz. "capacity" amount to the crankcase oil after a change, for all the above reasons, as well as the fact that overfilling, even a drop, is very bad. Always use the dipstick, and keep the level a little below the max mark.

Owner's manual on the Tohatsu website (under the Specifications section on Page 10) shows Gear Oil is approx 195ml, which is about 6.6 oz. This matches up to the page Tohatsu has on their website about How to Change Lower Gear Lube (http://www.tohatsu.com/tech_info/oil_change.html)...at the bottom it says 6.6oz for the 6hp

On page 9 of the owners manual it says 320 ml. My conversion was flawed. It's about 10.8 FL ounces. I only added 3/4 of a 10 oz tube when it began to flow out of the level hole. It definitely took more than 6oz. This is a 25 inch model. I let the lube drain for an hour before filling and expected it to take more... especially with my miscalc. Thanks for the feedback. I just was looking for what seems to be the norm for the amount required.

Quick tip on gear oil. Always shoot a squirt of gear oil in the top hole after you have drained it. That forces any debris that is left in the lower unit out.
