Nissan 70hp m70a will go in reverse not forward

On the lake the other day and the boat will go in reverse but wont shift into forward. You can hear the motor clunk into gear but not when going forward, but it does throttle up and run fine in reverse. I checked the cable and it does appear that the cable properly pushes the mechanism to engage the motor. Please help as im new to boating and my dad will be visiting soon and looks forward to fishing with me and my son.

You may have a disconnected shift rod, or a problem inside the prop shaft/push rod assembly.

Shift rod on the cable still works so you think it may be along the prop shaft?

Think in terms of what rides on the prop shaft, rather than the prop shaft itself.

Page 49-53. I am thinking it has to be something along the shaft at the bottom http://nissanoutboardparts.com/Part...M45A2-50C-60A-70A2 (1986) - (00221028-0).pdf. Not sure though

Fixed.... Problem was the clutch(part 18 on page 50-51 on link above) it appears one of the ears on the part got chewed up. The broken off piece then got lodged and wouldnt allow the shifting mechanism to fully operate. Besides defeating the snap ring without the correct tool, very easy fix. Good luck to those with similar problems. I hope this helps.
