Hey folks, I’m thinking about going to look at an 8 hp Nissan as a kicker motor for my 16 foot aluminum Starcraft. The motor is an hour and a half away for me so I’d like to find out what’s good what’s bad and what’s ugly about these motors if anything. I think it’s a 1980s to early 90s model. Looks pretty clean. New prop. Price seems attractive to me but I don’t know anything about these motors.

any thoughts?

Nissans are rebadged Tohatsu ones. Which model are we talking about ? year is irrelevant...

I have a that exact model (NS8B) as a kicker on my 16' Starcraft SS and it's been a great motor for the 2 years i've had it so far. The carb is very easy to remove and clean if need be. If the price is right and it runs well it will make a great kicker for that boat.

You can upgrade that 8 HP to a 9.8 HP with a carb swap if need more power..

On my Starcraft I find the 8HP at it's lowest speed is just about right for trolling. I think anything bigger you might be too fast. But that's good advice. Is the Carb the only thing that needs to be changed or are there other components needed to make the jump to 9.8?

Have only converted Tohatsus 9.9 to 15 and 25 yo 30. Both have different time advance, assume the 8 and 9 have same. A matter to check the Service Manual for clarification. More fuel intake needs more time advance if wanting a spot on conversion..
