Hey guys I just picked up an 8 hp Nissan and took it out on the lake to get some freshwater running through it(it was used primarily on a sailboat). I noticed that not all of the exhaust isn't coming out by the prop, some is coming out by the powerhead. What does this mean? Could it just be plugged up a little? Or is this a major fix kinda deal? Thanks for any input you guys might have.

Re: Nissan 8hp Exhaust

What is your model/serial?

If the exhaust is exiting from above the waterline, on the back of the leg, through a small hole or two, you are probably seeing the exhaust relief at work. That's normal. If it is leaking inside the cowling, you likely need a new base gasket.

Model- NS8B
Serial- 78931

It's leaking inside the cowling for the most part. It wasn't running up to par and when I took the cowling off there was a bunch of exhaust inside. Once I took it off and ran it with the cowling off letting it get some fresh air, it picked back up and ran fine.

Before changing base gasket, retorque under shaft housing bolts, maybe a bit loose, if not, change base gasket, seal gasket both sides properly with heat resistant silicone, mega gray type.
