I am thinking about purchasing a Nissan 9.8 four stroke with electric start. I want to upgrade the horsepower. I am told that it will require re-jetting or different carb. What does an upgrade cost? How much horsepower will I gain? What will the performance be? What kind of Cost?

Re: Nissan 9.8

Hi mgoodwin, A new 9.8 Nissan 2001 model is a two cycle, they have a new 9.9 model that is a four stroke. If you are in the market to purchase a new motor, I would reccommend that you get the horsepower you want from the start. If you modify a new motor, you may void the warranty. Also, it's usually less expensive to get one already to go, rather than buying the motor, then a part or kit to modify it and paying someone to install those parts. Also with the new emmission regulations, you may run into a problem.

Re: Nissan 9.8

thanks iceman.....I am trying to rid myself of changing from a 20 hp to a 9.8 when I want to fish 10hp and under lakes. I believe that I can modify the 9.8 and stay legal as opposed to having a 15 with a 9.8 cowling.

Re: Nissan 9.8

I have the 9.9 four stroke and have asked around about uprgrading to the 18 horse. One dealer said it could be done another said no.
Nissan said we won't tell ya if it can be done. I would do what lots of people are doing. Buy the 15 or 18 and then swap for the 9.9 cowling or just change the decals.
I was told that the 18 Nissan tops out at a
few more RPM's than the 9.9. Giving your boat a little more top end. Its up to you if you want to spend the extra. If I was to do it all again I might go the route of 18 horse and changing decals. Hopefully, the DNR wouldn't question it. Anyone out there done this and been caught?? Good luck!!

Hey, Goodwin! You are asking for help in breaking the law, or at least fraud. Why not obey the law and settle for a few less mph?

Better yet, fish where your 20 is legal.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)
