I just bought a clean low hour Nissan 15HP Motor and Jon boat

I would like to make it electric start with charging system

I see kits that show a fly wheel included and was told it had to have an alternator coil with it

I got a small parts book that looks like the magneto has an output for the rectifiers already and a fly wheel with a starter ring gear on it

Do I need a new fly wheel and alternator coil or just starter, rectifier and start solenoid.

I could sure cut the cost in half if so

Thanks

Re: Nissan NSF 15B

the model number is NSF15B 3V6-1
Serial 10184 and looks like it was made in Apr 2000

It still has all the stickers in tack

Where, how do I find if it's a B or B2

I can see 2 groups of wiring harnesses under the hood and some wires have what looks like dummy plugs perhaps for connecting to the (rectifier/regulator combo) ???

I do electronics very well, I just wondering if this model was ready for the rectifier.

The starting side of it, I'm sure is just the starter, relay and battery wires which I can make up myself

Your question could not be answered due to you not providing what model engine you have. Since parts procurement is based on that model number you will need to provide it to the dealer in order to get the correct parts.

Re: Nissan NSF 15B

You will find that the B2 (which is a later build) already comes with the ring gear type flywheel. Earlier rope-start B models did not have that gear, so converting a B would require swapping flywheels. Should be visible without disassembling anything -- if you can see the gear teeth, you don't need a flywheel.

I suspect you have a B, and will likely need a flywheel, unless it was replaced during a prior repair.

If the serial number sticker shows the model as NSF15B then it's a NSF15B model. If it was the B2 it would show as NSF15B2 on the sticker.

Re: Nissan NSF 15B

Thanks guys

Now I'm getting somewhere

Yes it does show NSF15B as a model number but it does have a starter ring gear on the fly wheel which is easily seen looking up where the starter goes

Why it has one I don't know, the other owner bought it brand new and has never had it in a shop ... it probably only has about a 100 hrs on it

So with the info you gave me, am I correct in thinking all I need is the Rec/Reg module, Starter, Start Solenoid, and Start Button and some Battery Leads

I can make up my own harness, and wire it. I also have access to eyelet swagging for the bat leads

I also assume the Rec/Reg module is a combo rectifier and charge regulator

Please correct me if I'm off

Thanks for the help people

Re: Nissan NSF 15B

Sounds like you are on the right track. Verify that you do have the alternator leads (see parts catalog and service manual to identify wires), and you should only need the starter (and hardware) and the rectifier/harness. Then your own custom wiring may save a few bux.
