Nissan Tilt Trouble again (wiring questions now)

Well boys, I got all my wiring hooked up, and I tried to tilt the engine. It didn't make any noise at all, no nothing. I am thinking that there are either a few wires crossed, or the switch is bad.<br /><br />I have a Digital Multimeter, but I am not sure which wires have which function. The wiring on the nissan is factory, yet the Clymer's manual shows it having different colors then it does, so I'm kind of perplexed.<br /><br />If anyone knows off the top of their head which wire does what, or a good way to TEST the tilt without using the switch on the control box, I'd appreciate it. I will be looking at it today during lunch, and I'll post some more info stating wire colors, etc..<br /><br />Thanks!<br />Shawn

Shawn, how many wires come out of the tilt motor itself and what color are they?

Walker, which is the tilt motor? The longer center mounted cylinder on the transom bracket? I assume so, since it is the largest. There are also to about the size of a 12oz soda can, on on either side of the longer center one.<br /><br />Or, is the tilt motor on the powerhead itself?<br /><br />On the powerhead, there is a pink and a blue wire. I can't remember exactly where they run to, and I didn't get a chance to check it out at lunch. I will check in the morning and post up. <br /><br />I will let you knows what wire colors dont have mates on the powerhead and on the wiring from the controls.<br /><br />Thanks for the response walker<br />Shawn

Those are all three tilt cylinders. Your tilt motor is probably tucked under where you can't see it with the motor tilted down. There should be a bundle of wires coming from under the motor pan somewhere.

Walker...the only two wires that appear to come from down there are light blue and pink. These are also the only two wires that go to the control box that aren't in the 8-pin connector, and aren't going to gauges. I assume that these are the tilt wires.<br /><br />I am thinking that the switch is bad, is that common? The switch feels very screwy, you can't feel it 'click' if you know what I'm saying.<br /><br />Let me know what you think.<br /><br />Thanks<br />Shawn

Can you follow the hydraulic lines from the 3 tilt cylinders Walker mentioned back to the tilt motor? If you can you should be able to follow the wires to a connector where you can bypass any switches/solenoids and apply power directly with a battery or battery charger.

Just got done looking at it. <br /><br />The motor was tucked underneath the transom mount plate, hiding from me!<br /><br />Anyways, There is a red, black, and blue wire. I'm assuming that the black is ground, red is either Up or down, and Blue is either up or down. Sound right?<br /><br />So, I should run a jumper wire from the black to the - side of a battery or charger, and run a jumper from the red to the + side, correct? This should power the motor...if I'm not mistaken. <br /><br />Now, if this does nothing, I've got a motor that is toast, or frozen...lets hope not! I think it is the switch...<br /><br />Thanks guys<br />shawn

I just headed out and looked at it again.<br /><br />It appears that from the wiring near the solenoids, there are two wires that head back to the switch. A pink and a blue. The pink wire connects to a white w/blue, and then it is cut.<br />This could be the reason why the switch wont work.<br /><br />If you look at my previous post(s) about this, I said something about some wiring that was coming out of the fuse box area that looked like 'trailer wiring', just like a trailer harness. Well, it looks like it is wired into the tilt solenoids. I am thinking that MAYBE the switch went bad on the control box, or it was not in a convenient place...so they mounted a different switch onto the dash or somewhere else. This is just a guess.<br /><br />Looks like I've got a test-light-full week ahead of me, hehe<br /><br />Thanks guys<br />Shawn

While I had the powerhead off of my Suzuki DT85 I had to get the base tilted up and down to help line the powerhead up during reinstallation. I believe it was similar and I think that my battery charger black(-) connected to the black wire and the charger red(+) connected to one of the others. One was for up and then the other was for down. This is from memory I don't have a diagram in front of me but I think you got it right.

WOOHOO!! We've got tilt!<br /><br />I first tried connecting the wires to a battery charger, and I didn't get anything. A few sparks where the alligator clips contacted the tilt wiring, but that's it.<br /><br />I then took the tilt BLUE wire (UP), and the tilt BLACK wire (ground), and connected them to my battery accordingly. VOILA! We've got tilt. <br /><br />At first it took it a second to actually move, I'm not sure if it needs to be bled, or if it is just because it hasn't been used in a while, or what. It wasn't straining, but just sounded like it was making noise but not doing anything. I'm not sure if this is normal or not, but, either way, it went up and down, and that's good enough for me!<br /><br />Thanks guys!<br />Shawn

Congratulations! Happy for you. Now a word of advice; Raise it up, put it on the lock ,disconnect the center ram and make sure it swivels freely. Don't keep overworking the trim & tilt untill it burns up the motor like I did. If you have corrosion in the pivot points & don't deal with it now it'll just keep getting worse.

Congratulations Shawn good to hear.<br /><br />Now unscrew the grease fittings and try to get some penetrating oil in there - I just freed up a turn tube that way. Let sit over night, tilt up/down a couple of times ( let motor rest between each turn ) and shoot in penetreting oil againg, When it moves freely - grease grease grease grease.
