I have a 15 ' Hobie Power Skiff in Everglades City which needs a new engine. Old engine was 50 HP Mariner which was underwater for a few days after Hurricane Wilma.

As per suggestion of the marina guy I can purchase locally and get dealer service on Nissan 40 HP (the boat was overpowered with the 50 and bow ran high), or buy an E-tech in Naples and have it worked on at the Everglades marina by this guy who has always done right by me so far.

I was given the boat and don't have any experience aside from about 5 fishing trips I've taken. I may be moving to Tampa area so don't know if the local purchase/service in EC is important. Any advice out there?

Main use will be backcountry fishing.

The Nissan has more hole shot, but other than that...Toss a coin, they are both reliable engines.

Getting the boat in the water late this season and will try out a new SS prop. Have not been impressed with speed available with the Honda 30. Should have gone larger. USCG specification detail oxidized years ago so not sure of max. rating or passengers. I have seen comparable boats with 50hp or larger.

Nissan is basically a Tohatsu.MD40 and MD50 are the same specs and weight
205 lbs.EPA and CARB approved. The Etec 40,50 and 60 are the same weight
240lbs also EPA and CARB approved. The Mariner was about 190 lbs.As much as I like the Etec I have to admit for your boat The lighter Tohatsu/Nissan is probably the choice.Just be sure which ever you go with is a properly trained full service dealer. These motors need properly trained techs.
Also your bow high problem may simply have been a trim and setup problem.

Nissans are great engines but dealers and parts are far and few. I believe the 40 Merc is a rebadged Tohatsu/Nissan though...so Merc and Tohatsu dealers can also provide parts. Maybe Tohatsu Guru man here can say for sure.

Well, as far as service goes, it sounds like his current dealer does service them, and if he moves to Tampa, I know he can get service there. ;)

Re: Nissan vs. E-tech 40 HP

There are more Tohatsu/Nissan dealers in Florida then there are Honda, Suzuki or Evinrude dealers so that should not be an issue. The Mercury 40 4-stroke is a Mercury design and Tohatsu isn't invloved with it. Tohatsu's M40D and M50D series is sold to Mercury and rebadged, but as far as I know Mercury did not bring any of those into the U.S. It is a possibility the Mercury will be buying the Tohatsu MD40-MD135 and replacing their own models of DFI with the Tohatsu DFI's. Rumors have been circulating since the Miami show. As Mercury moves further away from manufacturing and more towards a 2nd tier reseller anything is possible.
