nitro primer or choke??

Took boat to lake yesterday and i like to never got it to crank.took cover off and red thing on top(choke or primer was shooting gas out when i pushed in key..i guess it is cracked,,motor would not idle when trimed down....is that a choke or primer,,do i hold key in or push and release to crank??? thanks?? 1991 115 evenrude..

It's a primer and you push the key in and hold it in when cranking to activeate it. For normal operation, make sure the red lever on it is pararell with the hsg itself. You can get a kit at your local BRP dealer to repair it.
