I'm looking at buying a 1979 Robalo but the title has a NJZxxxxxxxxx ID Number. I know the old boats in NJ when ID'ed this way (as homemade)before MFG Vin # but the title and registration both have proper manufacturer description and registration numbers on them. The boat clearly has a MFG registration # on the transom but not on the title. Does anyone know whats going on with this?

Re: NJZ Vin Number??

The NJZ is not in the boat registry but is http://www.newjerseyboats.com/manufacturers/ as a home made boat.

Look on the right side of the transom and see if a number is embossed there.

I now where I live if you can not show a vin or hin and the vehicle is acceptable they assign a new state number to it so it can be registered

Thanks, There is a number on the transom not the same as the NJZnumber It's a SLIxxxxxxxx # Boat registry call it out as a"Sunfish Laser" which is consistent with a Robalo as they were made by AMF at the time. Has anyone used "Boatfax' or similar to search a HIN# and was it worth it?

I think it was known as a Slickcraft. There is a guy called Mr. Robalo over at robaloboating.com that can break down your HIN# and tell you what and when it was actually made. I belive he worked for the plant during that time line.
