No Beep ... Beep ... Beep Alarm

I am finishing up a 4.3 to 5.7 swap on a 94 Maxum with Alpha 1 Gen II.
The 5.7 engine is a '88 with same Thunderbolt IV ignition.
Everything seems to be working, engine starts, all gauges work, however when I turn the key (w/o starting) shouldn't I get a beep ... beep ... beep alarm after 7-14 seconds then go away after it starts? I tested the alarm like the manual says, jumping it to 12v and grd. It works. :D
Can someone push me in the right direction for trouble shooting? All the manual says is "problem with blu-tan wire" How do I test the various switches (oil, temp, lube) and where are they located.

Thanks again in advance.

Did the alarm work ok before the swap?

Or did this engine have the alarm that worked.

The alarm is actually part of the inst. panel wiring. There is a timer circuit in the alarm buzzer itself. I really don't think (not sure) that the 94 models actually had that timing circuit.

I do not know the answer to either.
I bought the boat w/o engine (repo) and bought the bobtail engine from a mechanic who was repowering the donor boat.
The alarm buzzer does work. I connected 12v and grnd.

Why/what would stop the alarm from sounding if I turn on the key w/o starting the engine.

With a standard system without the timer, when you trun the ign. switch to the run position, the alarm should go off immediatly with a steady continous beeeeeeeeeeeeeeep.
With the standard alarms on a 94 engine, you would have low oil pressure, high coolant temp, or low gear lube reservoir.
With the engine NOT running, you have low oil pressure and the alarm should be going off. That would be the first place to check. Since you did an engine replacement with an older engine, are you sure the alarm wiire is hooked to the right sender? One's for the gauge, one for the alarm. And they are different in how they work.

Re: No Beep ... Beep ... Beep Alarm

In the manual it says I have a timer circuit. "after 7-14 seconds".

Where are the switches on the engine compared to the senders. The manual says the tan/blu wires are wired to switches (temp, oil, lube) not senders.

And they work by shorting out if there is an alarm condition, right? So if I was to short out to ground one or all of the tan/blu wires it should create a "alarm" condition.

I think I will check continuity on my tan/blu from the panel to the back of the boat, then start checking switches/senders. But I cant find the oil and water switches on the engine. I found the gauge senders but not switches.

Thank you for your help.

Ayuh,...

That's probably because it wasn't used in 1988....

They'll be near the senders,+ within reach of the tan/ blue wires....

Maybe your 91 engine doesn't have an oil pressure switch. If it does, it's probably just above the oil filter on the port lower part of the block Tee'd with the oil pressure gauge sender.

Re: No Beep ... Beep ... Beep Alarm

Here is what I know thanks to all of your valuable input.

The '94 Boat is set up for them but, '88 engine has no temp switch or oil pressure switch.

Where can I buy these, what are the numbers and are there any details on where to install them?

Once I install all I have to do is connect to the tan/blu coming from the dash? Correct?

Again many thanks

Re: No Beep ... Beep ... Beep Alarm

Any Mercruiser dealer can get them for you. Do you have the wires in the wiring harness for the 88?

The wire harness (94) from the dash to 10 pin has the tan/blu. But the harness on the engine to the 10 pin has no tan/blu. I guess I will have to splice into the dash harness and wire to all three switches.(Lube, temp, oil)

Thanks for the help

Re: No Beep ... Beep ... Beep Alarm

Why don't you get the oil and temp switches off the 4.3 engine. Then cut the Tan/blue wire loose from the 10 pin connector and put a push on connector on it. Then run a wire to the oil and temp switches and up to that wire and plug it in.

That is what I am going to do except buy some switches. Can get the 4.3 switches as the boat had no engine when I bought it, (repo)

Here is the oil pressure SWITCH that you need...I just added this to my Mercruiser, and it works perfectly!

http://www.go2marine.com/product.do?no=116416F

I got the tee connection from NAPA (two parts...#3327, and 3700).

The water temperature switch comes in two flavors...red (inline 4), and black (V-6 and V-8). They have different temperature thresholds...the V-6 and V-8 being higher.

Both of these only need to be linked to the tan/blue wire...they get their ground from their engine block installation.
