Dad buys his 1st "big" boat - 17.5 mckee - center mount -70hp evindude (different story)- fishing boat, we always had little 6hp run arounds

We are 22 when dad gets the boat.

My twin buys a bilge pump and hose and brings it over to hook up to the boat.

Dad says NO WAY - you will drain the battery! This boat is self bailing!!! DO NOT INSTALL and got very angry about it.

We go out on the 1st trip to the delaware around N philly - it is early spring - cold - no one else really around.

we go out fishing, catch a small striper - toss it back

After a day of fishing we head back to the dock.

A tug boat heads down river with no load - creates large wake -

DAD - again - go slow go slow go slow!!!

We tilt up and then down and the 2nd wave crashes over the bow hits me about knee high and loads the boat with water

Remember no bilge pumps allowed.

DAD says no problem!! Its self bailing -

Problem!! Plug is on OUTSIDE of the boat below waterline,

Dad says get boat on plane and we can pull the plug out!!

Boat now loaded with water as we try to get on plane the water rushes to the back causing bow to point very very high!!

Boat on plane now pounding up river, Brother 1 hanging over back of boat to pull out plug - brother 2 holding onto brother 1.

Me I am driving at 90% throttle because boat is loaded with water.

Water drains from boat yeah!!!

Now we cant stop because the plug is out!! Must repeat steps to hold brother when putting plug back in!!

Next day dad put the bilge pump in.

---------------

Re: NO BILGE PUMP -

Yep, heard stories like that before "I don't need no bilge pump, my boat don't leak" Yeah, thats fine, but what about the large hole around the top of the boat. You would be surprised how much water can enter a boat during a pouring rain as well. Plus water splashing over the sides can dump plenty of water into a boat.

It is ashame that people have to learn from their mistakes Sometimes those mistakes become fatal ones that they never will have a chance of learning from. I always have bilge pump and a spare back up one if needed.
